Morton Island the Island of Sand

It started with  a 2 hr ferry ride.  All was going as normal. That soon changed as the boat ran aground and  the  boat dropped its gang plank onto the beach for us to unload.   Before we knew it the 4x4s and the vehicle we were in took off down the beach only to turn inland on a dog path for specially equipped 4x4s.  It was one lane only and it wasn’t long before we came head on with another  Jeep.  .One has to back up until there is a spot to pass. After 30  minutes of back roads we came to the living quarters.  With a 32 miles long island and only 100 permanent residents it was back to the basics to say the least. When we look for 4 ½ -5 star resorts when we are headed south we figured we had hit a 1 – 1/2 We were soon settled and ready for more adventure. . A short ride down through the bush on trails that would make our farm lanes look like highways we came upon the highest  sand dunes in the world(or so we were told)    Well now it was time to sand surf much like mud sliding except in  a 35 degree dessert .  All was good as even Marlene  went 300 ft down the sand dune on her specially designed sand board. It wasn’t long before the heat and climbing back up we were ready for water and some food ,   Peter and Lauren were up for the cooking detail and they did a great job of making pizzas for all.  That  night was quiet with a walk on the beach and many sightings of dolphins playing and feeding just a few feet off shore .Once  night fall came and we hit the bunks early.  The next morning was more driving down the back sand roads that  made your teeth rattle only to arrive at more pristine beaches.  The morning was taken up by watching the dolphins play and the surf crashing against the rocks . Then off to the top o f the mountain to visit the first light house build on the island.  Lots of hiking through the woods, always looking for big snakes and large spiders.  Late afternoon we once again boarded our ferry and headed to the mainland where we had a 1 ½ hr drive to Mooloolaba. WE were on our own for dinner so the Mc  Caigs and We headed off to a Thai restaurant and felt like we were back to reality.

  1. I love it! We have been staying in those kinds of digs lots of times over the past 5 years. Sounds like you will have lots of marvelous stories.

Hugs to all, M.E. and P.

  2. Sounds pretty rough, but rare. Neat how there are so many ways to experience life.
